Goals

I want to get caught up this weekend on my calender. This will include backgrounds for all the shots, and pegging of the characters. I would like to get everyone pegged out by monday so I dont have to worry about them later when I'm animating the shots. It's alot easier on me when I can come in and just sit down to animate. Weather permitting, I will get to peg everyone and save them all to my library. I can only do this process at school. Since I have to work all weekend I have a ton of time to prep my backgrounds and set up Layer Comps in After Effects.

More Reel Findings

It wouldn't let me download this one so i just embeded it to my post. I like the framing of the video and how it shows a formal format of the information about the artist, and what is showing at that moment. It states the project, his responsiblilities, and the name.

Demo Reel Research

Gobblynne Animation Showreel - http://vimeo.com/1357208
  • I liked the style of this reel, how animated the title was that personalized her name and intro of her character. I also liked the mixed animation and drawing styles she carried throughout the piece.

  • No way will my demo reel be as night as this one but If you were to look at his courses that he took at VFS you will see that this demo reel follows it to a T. He shows off extremely realistic models of his characters and their poly maps. I love that the demo reel is inspired by Casablanca - As time goes by.
  • I choose to talk about this demo reel because she puts in things I want to included in my own demo reel. I want to quickly run through drawings and sketches I've done over the years from this school and the last. I also want to bring in my sculpture art as well. I dont think she had the best demo reel but she showed her skills as a sculpture artist well.

More Job Research and Unpacking and My Big Plan (in the making)

After my meeting with Gadsby I had a better direction for what to look for and where. One of the links she gave me was Gamasutra.com. This was a great site to visit because it allowed me to search out companies in Seattle which is were I would like to work from. I decided after researching the area to post more Jobs and the companies I see myself working in.

First off I want to mention that ever since visiting Seattle over the summer, I fell completely in love with the atmosphere, the people, and the Art around the area. I have always known that I would need to move in order to start my career because Memphis is very limited, but it is hard to leave home and family.

I'm interested in 3D modeling and Texturing using Maya and Zbrush. I don't have much experience in rigging but it is something I want to learn. I have a few Maya and zbrush Models to show in my demo reel and if time permits I plan to increase what I have. As for my 2D animation skills, I am hoping my senior project helps show off the environment I'm creating for my creatures.

Using Gamasutra.com I was able to pull up gaming companies around Seattle.

WB Games Inc: FX Artist

http://www.warnerbroscareers.com/

WB Games is a new production studio formed in Kirkland, WA which is about 20 mins. drive out of Seattle from where I would like to live. They are dedicated to the development of games and interactive entertainment across all major console, PC and handheld platforms. The production company works closely with other Warner Bros. divisions such as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Warner Home Video. WB Games oversees the creation of games by internally owned developers as well as wide array of talented external game development companies. They are currently hiring for multiple key positions, the company also offers competitive salaries and benefits.

They are seeking an FX Artist to create high quality Special Effects Assets for their games.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Using industry standard 3D and 2D packages to create effects as simple as smoke particle systems all the way up to a fully destroyed cityscape.

  • Assists in R&D efforts for tools enhancements and prototyping of new Technology.

  • Participation in departmental meetings to share personal ideas and refine the look and feel of special game specific visual effects.

Work Experience:

  • They ask for 3+ years experience in the industry

  • At least 1 published game preferably 360 or PS3

  • Must possess good artistic skills and a working knowledge of 2D/3D art production.

Skills:
  • They are looking for involve Excellent communication and organization.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.

  • Strong interest in computer or video games.

  • Must be proficient in one or more types of 3D software (maya, 3D studio Max, SoftImage)

  • Must be proficient with multiple 2D applications, including AfterEffects, Photoshop, and similar applications.

  • Strong 2D digital Painting and/or drawing skills.

  • Strong understanding of modern real-time 3D engines.

Requirements:

  • They are asking for a portfolio/website demonstrating your art skills, design sensibilities, and attention to detail. and the ability to work well in a team environment and redo work until its right.

In my demo I need to concentrate on how I show my aftereffect skills which including particle effects. My digital paintings used from my senior project. My 3D modeling from Maya and Zbrush including the texture UV maps, and the animations from the set driven keys I have done in other projects.

Aquent Studios

http://aquent.us/extra/studios/index.htm

I'm interested in Aquent because they are looking for Environmental Artists for Sci-Fi Theme first-person shooter games. They ask for a strong sci-fi samples in the portfolio preferably examples showing outdoor environments. Their headquaters are based in Boston but they have recently set up in Kirkland, Wa which is 20-30 mins driven from Seattle. I don't have much sci-fi materials for my portfolio but what interests me about this company would be the 3D modeling, materials and texturing for game environments. This can include natural, Human, and alien environments which could include works from my senior project.

Requirements:

  • Strong sci-fi genre samples, preferably showing outdoor sci-fi environments.

  • strong knowledge of modern game asset development principles

  • superb high and low polygon modeling skills

  • sculpting, painting, and texturing skills

  • Experience with Autodesk Maya required

  • Experience with ZBrush or Mudbox required

  • Experience with Photoshop or other 2D art packages

The things I would need to beef up my portfolio for them is to include more sci-fi themes, as well as having more professional experience working with game environments. I can see this job being ideal later down the road after I have gained more experience. They do mention that the quality of work is more important to them than experience.

Experience using particles and /or other dynamic systems.

I want to apply to this internship because I feel I have good experience using transparency, modeling, and some knowing of shaders in Maya and how to build a UV texture. I have worked with particle systems in After Effects. And I have some gaming modeling experience from Secondlife where I produce and make textured and sculpted clothing for characters.
